Despite their limitations, school records are an invaluable source for family historians. At their best they can help to make up for the loss of the nineteenth-century census records. If you do not know the school that your ancestor attended, the first step is to find the location of school in the area where he or she lived. This can be done using commercial street directories that list schools from the middle of the nineteenth century. Ordnance Survey maps and the Ordnance Survey Memoirs may also provide useful information.
